When I started my first job at 16, it felt like pure freedom. I worked at a restaurant, and while I wasn’t crazy about the fact that I constantly smelled like a sandwich and didn’t get to stay in bed all weekend anymore, I reveled in the excuse to put my new driver’s license to work and in my newfound ability to make money. I also loved the social aspect of my job—a lot of my friends worked at the restaurant with me. Sure, I was required to make sandwiches and ladle soup for 6 hours at a time…but while I did it, I got to chat with my friends. 

I enjoyed it so much that I would sometimes ask to be scheduled to close, which meant staying until well after midnight. I didn’t love mopping the floors or cleaning off the hot sandwich presses, but it was the only way my parents were going to let me stay out that late on a school night. Worth it. 

The one thing I didn’t love about the job was the parking situation. The official restaurant parking lot was pretty small, so employees had to park in a gravel overflow lot that was a 5-minute walk from the restaurant and very poorly lit. Not exactly the kind of place a 16-year-old girl wants to be alone at midnight. 

Back then, there wasn’t a solution (at least, not one that didn’t require an expensive parking lot overhaul). But now, there is.

SafeNow is Peace of Mind in Your Pocket

LVT’s SafeNow is a feature designed to protect employees when they’re most vulnerable—for example, while walking to poorly-lit overflow parking lots after closing shifts. 

How it Works

Each employee receives a PIN that gives them access to the SafeNow feature in the LVT App. When they’re near a mobile surveillance unit, they can activate the unit’s deterrent features (floodlights, strobe lights, and audio warnings) directly from their phone with just a few taps. There’s even an escalation feature. If a situation feels especially threatening, users can immediately trigger a call to 911.
