Once a camera captures video, that information often needs to travel to another location. It may be transmitted over a cellular connection, Wi-Fi, or another network.

1. Ask How the Camera Is Protected

Start with the camera itself. Because it is the first place video is captured, a vulnerability at the device level can put everything that follows at risk.

When evaluating a platform, ask:

  • Does the camera use secure boot to prevent unauthorized software from running?
  • Is the firmware protected from tampering?
  • How does the manufacturer identify and address vulnerabilities?
  • Can firmware updates be delivered securely and remotely?
  • What protections are in place if someone gains physical access to the camera?

These questions will help ensure that your surveillance system has protections in place before the video ever leaves the device. 

2. Ask How Video Is Protected While It Travels

After video is captured, it has to get where it needs to go. For many surveillance systems, that means traveling over a cellular, Wi-Fi, or other network connection.

Ask vendors:

  • Is video encrypted while it is being transmitted?
  • What encryption protocols are used? (Look for systems that have TLS 1.2 or higher for data transmitted between cameras, servers, and users.)
  • How are network connections authenticated and secured?
  • What happens to video if the network connection is temporarily interrupted?

This is particularly important for mobile surveillance systems, where cameras may operate across locations without a traditional wired network. A platform should be able to maintain secure communications wherever its cameras are deployed.

3. Ask How Stored Video Is Protected

Once footage reaches its destination, it may be stored for days, weeks, or longer. That makes the security of stored video just as important as the security of video in transit.

Find out:

  • Is stored video encrypted? (The best systems should have AES-256 for encrypting stored video and other sensitive data.)
  • Where is the footage stored?
  • How long is it retained?
  • Who has access to it?
  • How is footage permanently deleted when it is no longer needed?

Surveillance footage can contain sensitive information about employees, customers, visitors, facilities, and daily operations. Buyers should understand exactly how that information is protected throughout its lifecycle.

4. Ask Who Can Access Your Video

A secure platform should make it easy for organizations to control access without making the system difficult to use.

Look for capabilities such as:

  • Role-based access controls that limit what different users can see and do
  • User permissions that can be customized based on responsibilities
  • Strong authentication to verify that users are who they claim to be
  • Multi-factor authentication (MFA) for an additional layer of protection
  • Administrative controls for managing accounts and permissions
  • Audit logs that show who accessed the system and when

These answers will ensure that the right people have the access they need, while not oversharing sensitive information with those who don’t need access. 

5. Find Out How Updates Are Handled

Cybersecurity doesn't end when a surveillance system is installed. New vulnerabilities are discovered all the time, and software needs to evolve to address them.

Before choosing a platform, ask:

  • How frequently are security updates released?
  • How are critical vulnerabilities communicated to customers?
  • Can updates be deployed remotely?
  • Can updates be applied across an entire fleet of cameras?
  • How much manual work is required from the customer's IT or security team?

For organizations managing dozens, hundreds, or thousands of cameras, this can make a significant difference. A security patch isn't very helpful if it takes months of manual work to deploy.

6. Understand How AI Handles Security Data

AI is becoming an increasingly important part of video surveillance. Instead of simply recording everything that happens, AI-powered cameras can analyze activity and help distinguish potential threats from false alarms.

For buyers, however, it's worth looking beyond what the AI surveillance cameras can detect. Ask how the AI itself fits into the platform's security design.

Consider:

  • Where does AI processing take place?
  • How are AI-generated events and metadata protected?
  • Who can access AI detections?
  • How are detection events transmitted and stored?
  • Can security teams control detection areas and alert settings?

A well-designed AI system can also improve security operations by reducing unnecessary alerts. Instead of notifying teams every time something moves through a camera's field of view, intelligent detection can help identify activity that actually warrants attention.
