Cargo theft risks increase during the Q4 holiday shipping season as freight volumes rise and staffing becomes stretched. Learn which types of cargo thieves target, where shipments are most vulnerable, and how to reduce theft through pickup verification, secure staging, and proactive monitoring. Discover how LVT helps protect freight during peak season.

As holiday shipping begins picking up in the fall, freight volume climbs and cargo theft climbs with it. Loaded trailers pile up in staging lots, dock schedules tighten, and every carrier tries to move more with the same crew. Thieves know that busier lots and tighter schedules create vulnerabilities they can exploit.

Here’s what the Q4 data says about cargo theft, where freight is most exposed, and which freight security measures make the biggest difference.

Why Q4 Is the Riskiest Quarter for Cargo Theft

Criminal activity typically intensifies in Q4 and reaches peak levels in December. This comes as no surprise. The holidays give criminals three things they want: closures, reduced staffing, and longer freight dwell times. Together, these conditions create perfect opportunities to get away with cargo theft.

Thanksgiving-period thefts hit 79 incidents in 2024, up nearly 65% from 48 in 2023. Reported events from December to January rose from 49 in 2020 to 89 in 2024, with about 69% happening between December 23 and 29.

Fewer Thefts, Bigger Losses

CargoNet recorded 677 incidents in Q2 2026, down 26% from a year earlier. But don't read that dip in incidents as good news. Estimated losses still hit $304.6 million, more than double the $135.7 million in Q2 2025.

What Thieves Are Targeting

Thieves tend to target cargo that is valuable and easy to resell, including:

  • Metals: Metal thefts rose from 54 incidents in Q2 2025 to 80 in Q2 2026, and copper remained the most targeted metal.
  • Enterprise technology: Organized groups keep going after computer and networking equipment, components, and cryptocurrency mining hardware.
  • Everyday goods: Food and beverage led all categories in Q3 2025 with 170 theft events, and CargoNet noted an uptick in games and toys as the holidays approached.

Peak season puts high-value freight and high-volume freight on the road at the same time. Your risk level depends on what you haul, but nobody's off the list.

Two Kinds of Cargo Theft, One Playbook

Physical theft gets much of the attention, but fraud is also a big issue. Business email compromise remained the primary access point for many of Q2's most sophisticated schemes, letting thieves impersonate people and change shipment details. Fictitious pickups accounted for 158 events in the quarter.

Supply chain security has to cover both. Verify who picks up your freight, and watch the freight while it waits.

Where Freight Is Most Exposed

Cargo theft usually happens when freight is at rest. That means drop yards, staging lots, truck stops, and the back corner of a distribution center where the fixed cameras don't reach. Burglaries, terminal robberies, and inside jobs all follow this pattern. Loaded trailers often get less protection than the warehouse next door. Shift changes, weekends, and holiday closures widen those gaps. So do temporary sites that never got permanent infrastructure.

Cargo Theft Prevention Checklist for Q4

October is the time to strengthen your defenses and test them before holiday shipping ramps up. Here are seven steps you can take now to reduce risk during the holiday season and beyond.

  • Verify every pickup. Use call-backs to verified numbers on file for pickups and appointment changes. Never rely on the contact information in the request itself.
  • Cut dwell time. Loaded equipment that sits is loaded equipment at risk. Schedule pickups tightly and avoid unsecured parking.
  • Use monitored parking. Stage equipment and make extended stops in secure, monitored locations.
  • Track high-value loads. Add tracking and alerts to the shipments thieves would target first.
  • Set driver check-in rules. Agree on check-in expectations before closures and long layovers start.
  • Lock down email. Business email compromise starts with one weak account. Tighten access and train your team on impersonation red flags.
  • Report fast. Tell law enforcement promptly about suspicious activity and confirmed incidents.

How Monitoring Closes the Gaps

Most of the checklist above depends on people, and people take days off. LVT (LiveView Technologies) builds mobile security units that monitor for you when humans can’t be on guard.

LVT® Units combine live video, deterrent lighting, and loudspeakers, and our team can set them up in minutes without construction or external wiring. Solar power, smart generators, and a cellular network mean a unit needs no external power or internet connection. That makes them an ideal fit for yards, drop sites, and temporary staging areas that fixed systems rarely reach.

A unit can trigger lights and audio when it detects someone in a restricted area, telling them someone is watching. It also alerts your team so they can act. Thieves want easy targets, and a yard that has an LVT Unit on it isn’t one.

The LVT® Platform adds another layer. Archived events across your units show patterns, like which yards see the most attempts and which days or times are most vulnerable. You can then put your Q4 resources where the risk is.

Start Early, Not December

Cargo theft peaks when your team is stretched thinnest. The freight security strategies that work best are the ones in place before the hustle and bustle of the holiday season hits in full force. Audit your pickup verification, find your unmonitored yards, and close those gaps while you still have time in the day to do it.
