Having a single point of failure is always a risk.
If hospitals only had one power source, any time the grid went down life support systems would lose power right along with the lights. If commercial airplanes only had one hydraulic system, there’d be a lot more planes falling from the sky. If schools had no substitute teachers, every sick day would leave a classroom full of kids without a teacher. All of these scenarios are less than ideal, to say the least.
The same is true for security systems: if one point of failure can take them down easily, it’s not ideal.
At LVT (LiveView Technologies), we built our solar-powered security cameras and mobile security solutions with redundancies in place and uptime in mind. Let’s explore the layers that keep our units running day and night, rain or shine.
Solar Power
Unfortunately, security risks don’t always happen near an electrical outlet. Some sites don’t even have electrical outlets. That’s a problem for some systems but not for ours; LVT mobile security solutions are self-contained and draw their power from the sun.
This offers some major uptime advantages. Because units don’t rely on the grid, they stay online during power outages. They’re also incredibly flexible. Since they don’t require trenched electrical cable, units can be placed where coverage is needed rather than where existing infrastructure allows.
Of course, a solar panel only generates energy when there’s sunlight. And while sunlight is generally a very reliable power source, you don’t want a security system that stops working any time it’s cloudy outside.
Battery Storage
Throughout the day, the solar panels on our mobile security units charge built-in battery banks. Battery storage essentially smooths out the natural fluctuations in solar generation. When sunlight is limited, the unit draws from that stored reserve. This allows the entire system—cameras, lights, loudspeakers, analytics, and other components—to operate consistently even when the weather isn’t consistent.
Still, batteries can only supply the energy they have stored. If poor weather or limited sunlight continues long enough, the battery bank may eventually need another way to recharge.
Smart Generators
Our units can be equipped with a smart generator. When voltage drops and the battery bank needs support, the smart generator automatically kicks in to gear and replenishes the stored power.
These generators are also engineered to outperform traditional gas or diesel models: no oil changes, less maintenance, and strong performance even in cold weather when a battery-only system would typically struggle.
Redundant Connectivity
Power keeps the hardware running. Connectivity keeps livestreams, alerts, and remote controls available to your team. High uptime therefore means keeping a unit both powered and reachable.
Instead of relying on a property's Wi-Fi or a single cellular carrier, our systems automatically switch between cellular providers to find the strongest available signal. If one network has weak coverage or experiences an outage, the unit can connect through another available provider. Plus, footage travels over LVT's private cellular network rather than a public network, so your data is never exposed to the same vulnerabilities as traffic moving across a shared, public connection.
System Health Monitoring
Redundant power and connectivity reduce the number of issues that can take a unit offline. System health monitoring helps prevent an issue from going unnoticed.
Through the LVT® Platform, teams can monitor unit performance and receive alerts when maintenance or a system check may be needed. LVT’s health-monitoring capabilities track conditions such as low-voltage disconnects, power loss, and network health.
LVT® Units also have self-healing capabilities. If a unit recognizes that it is not functioning properly, it can take certain corrective actions automatically. This means some issues can be identified and resolved without waiting for someone to discover missing footage or travel to the site.
